GENERAL INFORMATION

The Documentation Centre is one of the central services of the Metropolis Institute. The holdings of the Centre comprise material relating to the research areas of the Metropolis Institute. These areas are:

  • Urban and territorial planning
  • Regional and urban economy
  • Local economic development
  • Environment
  • Law, administration and local government
  • Urban geography and political geography
  • Urban sociology and local sociology

Within each of these topics, the Centre has a special interest in collecting documents of limited availability, which are not commonly available through normal distribution channels, such as:

  • Institutional publications
  • Technical and scientific reports
  • Urban plans, projects and norms
  • Memoranda from public and private companies
  • Theses and abstracts from congresses and seminars

The Centre began its activities in 1988 and its collection has been enriched by the generous additions published, amongst others, by the Generalitat of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona), the Federation of Municipalities of Catalonia (Federació de Municipis de Catalunya), the School of Public Administration of Catalonia (Escola d’Administració Pública de Catalunya), the Local Credit Bank (Banco de Crédito Local), the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia (Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya), the Ministry of Public Works (el Ministerio de Fomento), in addition to the aforementioned donations from many town councils of the Barcelona-area and from the rest of Catalonia.

Today, the catalogue of the Documentation Centre is integrated within the network of libraries of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), and can therefore be consulted from any computer connected to Internet.
