From its beginning in the year 1984, the IERMB has carried out nearly three-hundred studies within the framework of its main lines of investigation, which, although defined in its own statutes, have evolved and are at present centred on the following topics:

  • Study of living conditions and habits of the population
  • Victimisation and citizen’s security
  • Analysis and territorial planification of infrastructure, equipment and services
  • Economy and labour market
  • Mobility and transport
  • Use and perception of the territory
  • Urban metabolism
  • Territorial efficiency

In all these years, the IERMB has carried out studies on basic, applied and theoretical research.

In basic research, the IERMB has worked on the development of databases, from the design of samples and Surveys to the analysis of results, through to the whole process of implementation and control of fieldwork. IERMB has developed databases in fields as diverse as living conditions of the population, perception of security, mobility and great urban areas.

In applied research, the Institute has developed several lines of work aiming for the analysis of the different aspects of regional and metropolitan phenomena, both from the general and sectorial perspectives; the aim of these analyses is to assist the administrations on decision-making. The interdisciplinary approach is a distinctive characteristic of IERMB.

In theoretical research, the contribution of IERMB has been to think about the metropolitan and regional reality, based on studies of the organisation and provision of services, using comparative studies of the reality of the metropolitan region of Barcelona with other comparable metropolitan areas and regions. The Institute complements the requests made by the authorities with competitive national and international research projects.

Since April 2010, the IERMB has a new area of sustainability and satellite studies. This area, through interdisciplinary studies (incorporating the economic, social and environmental dimensions) aims to tackle the regional dynamics at urban, metropolitan, regional, and megaregional scale. The results of this research are both strategic and applied studies.
